AA’s new boarding passes: An innovation that’s actually not screwing the customer
On our way to Portland last night, I noticed that AA has totally redesigned the boarding pass that you get from the gate agents (see image below…and yes, we got a sweet upgrade)…it’s of a slightly thicker stock, and has a nice bar code at the top…I was wondering why they did the redesign until we went to board the plane. Instead of them having the run that boarding pass through the reader and have it check (a process that takes 5-10 seconds), they just waved it under the bar code reader that they have for the other passes (self-checkin and kiosk), and it cut a good 5 second off getting a person cleared to get on the plane.
Cut five seconds off per pax of a 120 passenger plane, and you’re talking 600 seconds (a good 10 minutes saved) which is incredible for them and well worth the redesign.
Unlike the new “innovations” in the fees category, this is one that is a really good idea and a great benefit to both AA (able to board people faster) and to us (able to board faster).
