Mai Tarpy — A True Irish Rose

This item was filled under [ Matthew sad ]

My Great-Aunt Mai Tarpy passed away this morning in her beloved Clifden, Co. Galway.

I got to know her over the last ten years since I visited her and my Uncle Dave, and I last saw her last April when Robbyn and I went over for a week. By then both she and Dave were in the local nursing home, but she still had her spirit. She was a sweet, lovely lady who was always quick to ask how you were, what was going on in the States, and always quick to tease Uncle Dave.

She embodied all that is good and decent about the Irish people; their sense of humor, hospitality, and an unyielding belief in that unique breed of peasant luck only the Irish have which never conflicted with her just as deeply held Catholic faith… and I will sorely miss being able to spend time with her.

Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Amen.
