Food Apartheid, or, how some animals are more equal than others…

William Saletan has an amazing article over in Slate (a site I rarely agree with, except for Prudie, who I read religiously) on how the L.A. City Council is banning the construction of fast food joints in economically distressted neighborhoods.

While their intent may be good (helping people eat better), franking their methods are too nanny-state for my taste.

Honestly, the comment from the Councilman on how what they’re doing isn’t too far from how they regular liquor stores is telling…it rips the pliant mask off of this and show that what this is about is control…the Councilmen aren’t interesting in really helping people, they want to impose the way of life that THEY think is correct on the rest of us. There’s a large difference (even in my mind) between having a targeted ordinance that keeps liquor and gun stores away from schools, and one that outlaws the Golden Arches.

The L.A. City Council has over-reached and ought to back down before they lose the innevitable court challenge.
