Drugs are bad, mmmkay?

This item was filled under [ Drugs ]

Lord knows, I’m not all into taking more drugs than one needs, but this article on Consumerist should be taken with a real large grain of salt; to wit:

9. Insist on generic drugs
Um, sometimes that’s not a good idea. I take a med that while it has a generic formula, I need to take the controlled-release version (Drug Name-CR) because the generic, or brand name non-CR version causes all sorts of GI trouble to me. Sorry, but in this case, generic isn’t better…if there was a generic CR, then I’d totally take it.

13. Don’t treat side effects of one drug with another
OK, I call bullshit on this. Most of you know I have OCD, one of the main drugs that is used to treat OCD is Luvox (and let me tell you, it’s an awesome drug) has two common main side effects, wild mood swings and sexual dysfunction (yeah, that’s fun). To treat those two side effects, psychiatrists commonly, very commonly, prescribe Seroquel (or something like it) to treat mood swings, and Wellbutrin (generic: bupropion) to treat sexual disfunction. This isn’t just scripting drugs willy-nilly, it’s treating the disease and the side-effects caused by treating it. Sorry, this one I just don’t buy.
