Change of Bourbon: Old Forester

June 24th, 2008 | Category: b00z

So after the absolutely blah of Evan Williams yesterday, I dumped it out and start over with a new challenger, Old Forester:

Tasting notes: Unlike the blah I had last night, this bourbon has a nice flavor, albeit a touch strong on the alcohol burn.  Nice woody start, then the burn, and then a nice, warm finish. Very nice for a bottle that only costs $14.99 for a fifth.

Evan Williams: It’s Jim Beam!

June 23rd, 2008 | Category: b00z

This week’s experiment in Bourbon is Evan Williams (seen here):

My tasting notes are pretty simple…it’s Jim Beam…now I *know* it’s NOT Jim Beam, but damn, if you gave me a blind taste test, I don’t know that I could tell the difference.

I think I’ll try to get my hands on some George Dickel, and see if all the fuss was worth it.

Ezra Brooks: A Bourbon to Forget

June 16th, 2008 | Category: b00z

This week’s exploration in bourbon is Ezra Brooks

I should have known that if the entire fifth cost $10.99 that something wasn’t going to be quite right with it. Beyond having a harsh initial taste, overpowering you with the raw flavor of grain alchohol, it finishes with a sour aftertaste that leaves one thinking that they could have gotten a hip flask of Bulleit for about the same price.

The only thing to recommend it, is that if you need a shot of liquid courage, this bad boy’ll certainly get the job done for you in short order.

So, the good thing about staying in Kentucky…

is that you can get singles of all sorts of good, local bourbon.

Here we’ve got Bulleit Bourbon…nice, smooth, and with a good kick:
